The spectra of these stars seem to fit nicely into the same categories as the oxygen-rich AGB stars. This error was exposed whilst trying to reconcile meteoritic SiC data with the numerous astronomical observations which had, until now, presented a discrepancy between the type of SiC carbide believed to form around carbon-rich AGB stars and that found in meteorites, also believed to form around such stars.

Furthermore, diamonds have an interesting ultraviolet spectrum of their own Andersen et al. Finally, there are two stars, one carbon-rich TX Psc and one oxygen-rich T Cetwhich were excluded from the two samples chapter 6 and chapter 8 respectively due to their bizarre spectra.

Perhaps the most affected tasks are highly interactive tasks, or perhaps cognitively demanding tasks, or reading-intensive tasks.

Applying results to situations There are many possibilities for the application of this research to building systems to address awareness needs and related problems. In my empirical evaluations, I selected browsing tasks to be performed because several pilot study participants indicated that for them the most likely time for using animated displays was while browsing the Web.

The best fits to the spectra of these stars was found to use self-absorbed silicon carbide. It was assumes that the sequence of groups represented some sort of dust evolution, and hence various correlations of spectral features with physical parameters of the stars were sought e.

The Agentk toolkit described in Chapter 6 included two graphical augmentations to the animated displays, automatic highlighting and history-based shadowing, that showed promise in informing the user of changes. One area of future work is in combining the knowledge gained about animated peripheral devices with knowledge about the peripheral communication abilities of other media types.

In addition, the spectral features for each of the stars in this sample were identified. In order to test the performance of the implemented ad hoc messenger under changing network topologies, the node speed and pause time parameters are manipulated.

Having shown, in chapter 8, that SiO2 likely to be present in the circumstellar dust around oxygen-rich AGB stars, further investigations need to take place. In creating Agentk, it has become clear that much of the code can be shared among widgets. The options and bindings of the widgets provide additional support that can be helpful in maintaining awareness.

However, many potential users may want and need to use animated displays at other times. Agentk also allowed text and images to be combined in animated widgets as seen in the CWIC passive image browser described in Chapter 6though the effectiveness of fading images has not been analyzed.

Since much of the work in maintaining awareness has been rather ad-hoc, this thesis helps to provide a framework for future investigations of the awareness properties of communication mechanisms as well as specific guidelines for the use of animation in peripheral displays.

These effects have the potential to lessen the distraction caused by the animations and improve the ability of the widgets to communicate by generating smoother changes.

8. Conclusions and Future Work This thesis has examined the task of maintaining awareness of dynamic information sources, progressing from the early stages of examining potential communication mechanisms to the development of an understanding of the benefits of animation in maintaining awareness.
